What is the curriculum for High School English?
I’m an adult student returning to College. I’m interested in becoming a high school English teacher, and I have some questions that I haven’t asked anyone about yet. What do High Schooler’s study in English? Is the focus mostly on novels and poetry, or do they still study grammar and sentence structure? Is high school more about research and reading or is there still a focus on the mechanics?
Research the state you want to live in and check out its Program of Studies. It can be found online. That is the curriculum sent from the state.
I’ve taught English for 18 years. We teach literature and language usage. However, the “big dog” is writing. Be prepared to teach and read lots and lots and lots of writing.
