Poetry Analysis?
Anyone know the meaning…like in a paragraph or less of Emily Dickinson’s “An Altered Look About The Hills?”
An altered look about the hills –
A Tyrian light the village fills –
A wider sunrise in the morn –
A deeper twilight on the lawn –
A print of a vermillion foot –
A purple finger on the slope –
A flippant fly upon the pane –
A spider at his trade again –
An added strut in Chanticleer –
A flower expected everywhere –
An axe shrill singing in the woods –
Fern odors on untravelled roads –
All this and more I cannot tell –
A furtive look you know as well –
And Nicodemus’ Mystery
Receives its annual reply!
i esp dont understand the flippant fly, the choice of color (vermillion) and the firtive look of spring.
It’s not about a simple change of season. It’s about Spring itself.
“A Tyrian light the village fills”: Tyre was referred to by alot of poets at this time and before (William Shakespeare had a play entitled “Pericles: Prince of Tyre.”) “A print of a vermillion foot” is probably a reference to a bird. “A purple finger on the slope” is most likely a reference to heather. “The flippant fly upon the pane/a spider at his trade again” is just speaking of the spider capturing a careless fly. “An added strut in Chanticleer” is a reference to a rooster. Flowers are expected everywhere in Spring. “An axe shrill singing in the woods” is a sign of a woodsmen’s return to work. “Fern odors on untravelled roads”: the roads haven’t been traversed in some time and now the fern has sprouted where there were no tracks made. “Nicodemus’ Mystery” refers to resurrection, renewal or rebirth. Nicodemus was the man who entombed Christ in the bible. If you’re analyzing the poem for class don’t forget DIDLS: Diction, Imagery, Details, Language and Subject.
Forgot to add: The furtive look: reference to stealth. Stealth of transformation, most likely.
