How would a Romantic like Wordsworth view death?
I’m reading some of Wordsworth’s poetry and in, for instance, Tintern Abbey, he consistently connotes death as a positive experience.
He says, for instance, that death yields (and this is secularized, mind you) a sort-of eternal unification with nature. When he talks to his sister in Tintern Abbey, he again makes death a positive experience, this time in the form of the memories it allows.
Could you tell me how typical Romantics (earlier generation, preferably, like Wordsworth) viewed death, generally?
I think you’ve just described it. Coleridge was more oriented to traditional Christian beliefs, Blake had his own universe of otherworldly existence, but allowing for small differences, they all would have shared the feeling that death was a doorway into another and probably more important or better reality.
There is a really good documentary on Romanticism with one episode dedicated to their conception of Death. There isn’t much in-depth information (for citiations, etc.) but it is a great presentation which gives the general picture really well. Here is the link for it on Youtube:
