Photography business – need information on equipment etc.?
I am thinking of starting my own photography business at some point in the near future, next few years once the money is saved up and I have done an Advanced Diploma in the subject (I love photography). I want to open either a studio or home studio (not sure which one just yet) and doing portrait and family shots mainly. What sort of equipment do I need and what kinds of brands or types of cameras, flashes, backdrops etc. would you recommend? Any tips or things to look at?
Any other information is greatly appreciated to!
You will need all of the above. lights, umbrellas, light boxes, reflectors, strobes, flashes, filters, lenses, light tents, cameras, tripods, backdrops, posing stools/chairs, and mainly a lot of money.
A medium format camera would be my choice for a studio camera, preferably a Hasselblad, or if that is unaffordable a Mamiya, and assorted lenses for portraits and for macro, you may want to do some commercial work. You could use a DSLR or a SLR, but I find I still prefer using film for a lot of my studio work.
Go to http://bhphotovideo.com and look at the studio gear they have to offer, it will give you a good idea of the funding you will need. It is not inexpensive to set up a proper studio, but once you get your initial set up, you’ll have fewer expenses each year.
