Should I get a Creative Writing Degree or a Photography Degree?
I love writing. I like taking pictures too but I just started liking it a couple of years ago so I don’t know if I will love it later.
I knew I loved writing since I had communication arts in 7th grade (I’m 18 now). Now I love writing and people loved my poems in class too. I also want to become a writer and write film scripts.
But I like photography but I’m thinking I just like it as a hobby because I really don’t like working with programs like photoshop.
I’m going to community college soon so I need to decide!!!!!
I’d suggest literature classes to start with. It’s still early days and you don’t need to zero in quite so soon. Who knows, in college you may discover all kinds of new subjects (not really taught in high school) that you will really enjoy and that will lead to a fulfilling line of work.
You sound very creative and intelligent- have you ever studies psychology? You might like sociology too. All these subjects (including Lit) deal with human relations, how people think and interact. All important for a writer, and far more apt to lead to a paycheck.
Write too.Write often, and take writing classes as well. But I am sorry to say that a degree in the arts and $1.50 will only get you a small cup of coffee. Jobs are scarce. Prepare for something solid and write too! That way, everything you study will be “grist for the creative mill!” Explore the world and your writing will reflect the larger view you will discover!
