group poetry exercises
Can you help with my writer’s group exercise?

This is my first go at a writer’s group. For next week I have to merge two ideas into one in order to come up with something. It can be prose or poetry or rambling nonsense. Its cloak isn’t important. BUT, two ideas as one: what’s your thoughts? Is this a basic guideline in the construction of a story? It seems natural to put one character here, another there, and in the end they meet. Is this two ideas as one? Thanks for your help.
My confusion lies in the fact that I can think of two very different ideas (or storylines) and combine them. But they then become one storyline and all of a sudden I’m back with a single story/idea. Maybe i’m thinking too much about it. As you say Mrs T, it’s meant to stimulate, not kill the brain.

Lambent amy: I like the nature idea. thanks.

It’s an exercise to get your creative brain juices flowing and give you the chance to express two juxtaposing ideas.

Just pick anything that excites your present mind, think of it’s polar opposite, then simply write down quickly what is inside your heart.

For instance, at this moment rain is bouncing hard off my kitchen window, the room is becoming dark and eerie and I think my plans for the day might be ruined. So I could perhaps write about how this affects me and makes me feel in contrast to yesterday’s sunshine, and maybe tie in a few colourful memories to add some concrete detail.

The ideas above are good ones but they may lead you into writing an argumentative type essay. Boring.

Instead, try to think closer to home and make things a little more personal. That way, your work will without doubt have more impact.

And remember that it’s ‘creative’ writing, so just let loose and try not to over think it. You can always edit what you’ve written afterwards.

Good luck.
